New York University (NYU) is now the first university in the U.S. to offer its students a major in blockchain technology.

Major in Blockchain Tech

The NYU Stern School of Business will administer the new program according to reports. The school also pioneered undergraduate courses in cryptocurrencies and the blockchain.

“We hope to establish a groundwork so that the students can understand what’s really happening under the hood. So that they can understand both the legal and the business implications, and prepare them to go out and tackle this new market.”

According to associate professor Kathleen Derose, the institute expects enterprises and large companies to partner with the new training program. Derose added, “the startups in [fintech] will likely invent the new cool stuff.”

NYU doubled the course offerings this year considering the increasing number of students interested in the new offer.

Adam White from Coinbase, said that the students “see the development, the birth of a new industry,” and that “in many ways, we look at things like Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) and blockchain as the internet 3.0.”

Coinbase Study

Coinbase released a new study last month. It indicates that 42 percent of the top 50 universities in the world now have at least one class dealing with blockchain and cryptocurrencies.

The study reviewed nearly 172 classes. Economics, law, finance, and business departments offer 15 percent of these classes.  Social science departments are responsible for 4 percent.

In addition, the study established that cryptocurrency and blockchain courses are most popular in the US. In fact, the interest of US students is not only evident in educational programs, but in crypto investment as well.
