Using Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain Technology to Decentralize Data

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology possesses impressive features. It is capable of creating cognition in machines with computational power. Despite this benefit, critics worry that tech-savvy developers still control AI projects from central points. Therefore, to allow people to control them centrally, these critics argue that such projects offer mere “narrow AI”

In comparison with human cognition, narrow AI is neither conscious of emotions nor emotion-driven. Basically, narrow AI functions within a pre-determined and predefined scope, even though it may appear more sophisticated than that. Typically, Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Siri exhibit the applications of narrow AI

Understanding the importance of narrow AI

According to Arif Khan, SingularityNET’s VP of Marketing, large tech companies control narrow AI, which in turn results in the development of a narrow data set. Additionally, Khan argues that this trend could harm the promising future of Artificial Intelligence. To bring the impact of data sets into context, he drew an analogy with social media website Facebook. Khan said that if Facebook needs to create an AI algorithm, the company cannot expose its data set to its competitors. The reason, Khan said, is that the aim of data set is to provide value to the Facebook user.  He added that the data set will eventually give shareholders a pigeonhole view of society even though the original intent was to give them optimal value.

Another downside of narrow Artificial Intelligence

There’s no denying the fact that those making the case for narrow AI are making some valid points. Nonetheless, there is a flip-side to it.

For instance, in 2016, software giant Microsoft unveiled Tay, an AI-based Twitter bot. According to Microsoft, Tay was an experiment of “conversational understanding.” In a press statement, the software development firm revealed the bot will learn from people through interaction (chats). As a result, Microsoft tagged learning through casual and playful conversions.

In fact, everything was moving smoothly until a Twitter user started teaching Tay racist remarks. Given that it is a centrally controlled bot, Tay started relaying the same sentiments to users. To Microsoft, that was a clear sign that things have gone awry.

Diverse data set with Blockchain Technology

Unlike AI-based projects, blockchain technology is a major game-changer in this arena. Essentially, the technology can create a decentralized and transparent network that is accessible to all and sundry. Instead of narrowing data use, SingularityNET is championing the cause of deploying blockchain technology for broader data distribution and algorithms.  Therefore, the firm is working round the clock to develop artificial intelligence and distribute it. By creating a seamless union between AI and the blockchain, Khan says their team can build diverse algorithms on diverse data sets.

More importantly, the application of this technique is more appealing as the product will lack the control of a central authority. For example, SingularityNET team will deploy this technology in a humanoid robot named Sophia. Hanson Robotics-owned, Sophia will be more flexible and will appeal to the broader spectrum of AI providers to provide answers to questions.
